You may remember him mostly for his role as the iconic teen-turned-vamp in the classic '80s flick 'Fright Night'. Or maybe as the demonic possessed nerd from '976-Evil'. He has been away from the horror genre for 15 years and now, Stephen Geoffreys is back, working on his newest scare-flick 'Sick Girl'. HorrorHound had the chance to steal a few minutes of Stephen's time to discuss his career, find out where he has been and find out where he is going! Here is what Stephen had to say:
HorrorHound: It says here you were born in Cincinnati (the home of HorrorHound). Did you grow up in the area, how long, and what are some of your fond memories of Cinci?
Stephen Geoffreys: I was born and raised in Cincinnati. I left there whe I was 18 to go to college. Sklyine Chili, Graeter's Ice Cream and sitting in Riverfront Stadium watching Pete Rose sliding into 3rd base rank high on the list of the many warm memories of my time spent in Cincinnati.
HorrorHound: You went to a college for performing arts - how did you transition from college to Hollywood? How long did it take you to get your first film roles?
Stephen Geoffreys: It took me approximately one year of auditioning after college until I was cast in 'Heaven Help Us'. That was my first film role.
HorrorHound: 'Fright Night' instantly made you an icon to the horror crowd. Did you notice a lot of recognition right away, and did you like being known as "Evil Ed"?
Stephen Geoffreys: After the film opened, I would get on the subway - I lived in New York - and I'd run into a group of kids who had seen 'Fright Night'. They would implore me to "do that laugh you do in the movie!" It was a hoot. I loved it.
HorrorHound: How was it working with legend Roddy McDowall? Any fond stories?
Stephen Geoffreys: He was the ultimate pro. While waiting for a scene to be set up, he would tell stories of his legendary work in Hollywood. It was very entertaining. Especially good was the "dirt" he had on some of the actors he worked with!
HorrorHound: It has been 20 years since 'Fright Night' was released. Do you think the film holds up as well today as when it was originally released?
Stephen Geoffreys: Absolutely. Every aspect that went into the making of the film was solid. I receive Emails still today from those seeing the movie for the first time who are hooked.
HorrorHound: You stayed with horror for a couple years - most notably doing '976-Evil'. How would you compare your work on that film with 'Fright Night'?
Stephen Geoffreys: I had a great time working on both of them. Being in a horror movie is like attending a spectacularly wild Halloween party. There's almost no limits as to where one can go with their imagination.
HorrorHound: You were directed by the legendary Robert Englund - tell us about how you got the role and working with the master of horror himself?
Stephen Geoffreys: The script was sent to me, I read it, and accepted the role. It was an honor to work with such a gifted artist such as Robert. He has so much enthusiasm for the creative process and a great sense of fun.
HorrorHound: After '976-Evil' and a couple other flicks, you went away from the scene. Can you tell us a little about where you went and why its been so long since horror fans have seen you?
Stephen Geoffreys: I've spent the past few years doing live theatre. It was my first love.
HorrorHound: Tell us a little about the new projects you have coming up.
Stephen Geoffreys: I plan to work on Eben McGarr's next film, "Los Convenio". Can't wait.
HorrorHound: Are you a little anxious about these new projects - are you excited to be back in the genre and to hit conventions, ect and be with the fans?
Stephen Geoffreys: I'm happy to be promoting 'Sick Girl' and additionally, meeting the loyal fans of my work.
HorrorHound: Outside of HorrorHound Weekend, will you be attending more shows in the future - or do you plan on working on your films a little more before doing all the "rounds"?
Stephen Geoffreys: I will be doing a promo tour across the country for the upcoming film, "Sick Girl".
HorrorHound: What can we expect to see from you in the next few years?
Stephen Geoffreys: I love acting. I've done theatre, movies and television. I get enormous pleasure out of doing it all.
HorrorHound: Any last words for all those Evil Ed fans out there?
Stephen Geoffreys: I'm touched by all of the kind and supportive fans. I'm also very grateful to be given the chance to work on new film projects. I feel very lucky.
